Using the Index Manager in FatCat Servers Web Hosting cPanel

By default if there is not a file found in the Index Priority List, in a given directory, the contents of that directory will NOT be displayed in a browser

IMPORTANT: Enableing this option is usually considered undesirable, and can cause security issues

The Index Manager allows you to customize the way a directory will be viewed on the web. This tutorial will assume that you are logged into your cPanel. If you are having trouble doing that, please see the tutorial named How to Login to cPanel

With Index Manager, you can set your account up to allow your directory contents to be shown.

On the main cPanel page, scroll down to the "Advanced Tools" section. There you will click on the Index Manager icon. This will take you to the main Index Manager page. You will see your folders listed there.

You can navigate through them by clicking on the icons. Click on the directory you want to change

Another Screen will open, where you will see the path for your chosen directory. There are four choices here:

  • Default System Setting - Server Default (Same as NO Indexing)
  • No Indexing - does not allow directory contents to be shown
  • Standard Indexing - allows browsers to view the contents of directories that do not contain a default index page
  • Fancy Indexing - allows browsers to view the contents of directories that do not contain a default index page

Click on one radio button and click the Save button. This will take you to the verification screen, where you can see that the settings have been updated.

Click on Go Back. You can now exit by clicking on "HOME" and returning to the main page of your cPanel.

You can return and change the settings at any time, for any of your directories. You can now exit cPanel by closing your browser, or by using the Logout button in the upper right corner.

IMPORTANT: If you are using a public computer, ALWAYS Logout of cPanel before closing browser for security reasons
